HYDERABAD: A police constable allegedly siphoned off more than Rs 5.86 lakh meant for salaries to Home Guards. The scam, which was going on since August last, in the city Home Guard commandant’s office, came to light recently and the accused constable is absconding. The 22-year-old cop, A Vinay Kumar of Meerpet, was attached to the commandant’s office at Purani Haveli as a writer.According to Mirchowk police, there are more than 1,000 Home Guards in the unit.“Every month some guards either get transferred to some other place or a vacancy is created due to technical reasons.Every home guard is given an account number into which the salary is deposited and an ATM card to operate the account, when he is inducted and they are taken away when the guard gets transferred,” a police officer said.Such vacancies happen every month and Vinay Kumar allegedly used the account numbers of transferred home guards to siphon off money.“Every month he used nearly 7-8 such account numbers and took away the salary credited into these accounts.He did the same from August last year to January this year,” Mirchowk police inspector, S Venkat Reddy stated, adding that the money stolen was nearly `5.86 lakh.
