CHENNAI: A 34-year-old mechanical engineer, who took to crime to make easy money, was arrested in connection with the blackmail and extortion of a couple at T Nagar in January.Police said the arrest of 34-year-old Jamaluddin of New Washermenpet came following a complaint lodged by M Ramakrishnan (28), a software engineer from T Nagar. He alleged that he had gone shopping with his fiancée to Pondy Bazaar on January 28 and after that he stopped his car on Lodhikhan Street in T Nagar at 9.45 pm and was talking to his fiancée, when a man dressed in khaki approached him and claimed to be a policeman. Ramakrishnan said the ‘cop’ threatened to book him if he did not cough up money. Hence, he gave his ATM card and the man withdrew a total of `65,000 from two ATM centres at T Nagar and Alwarpet, and left. Ramakrishnan then lodged a complaint at the Soundarapandianar Angadi police station.A police team then arrested Jamaluddin on Saturday. A stolen motorbike and cash of `65,000 were seized from him. He was remanded into custody.
