CHENNAI: Use of tobacco in the village is not confined to cigarette or beedi smoking, but is also used orally and nasally. Tobacco usage starts from a very early age. Coupled with less than required oral hygiene practices, these people are at a high risk for oral cancer and related diseases.The Young Indians wing of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), in collaboration with Schwing-Stetter organised a day long dental screening camp for the residents of four villages in and around Sriperumbudur. The villages covered are Katrambakkam, Pudupedu, Kevalur and Samudrapuram.Anuradha, coordinator of the event said, “Around 20 doctors are at the villages.The aim is to give them dental checkups and educate them about the ill uses of tobacco.They are also talking to youngsters as well, and discouraging them form starting tobacco use, and to persuade the elders to stop using tobacco.” A total of close to 500 villagers are to be reached by this programme.
