BANGALORE: There are many areas in Bangalore where acute shortage for drinking water is a daily feature of people’s lives. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the State Government are spending crores of rupees to asphalt the roads or strengthen drains but do nothing to augment water supply.Residents on the outskirts of the city are suffering from various illness after consuming contaminated water. The water in most borewells is salty and not potable. They have to use this water since there is no alternative. Many people are also suffering from Kidney-related health problems. There are many patients from economically poor families, who can not afford the treatment.According to me, the water supply can be augmented if the government takes measures to divert Hemavathi river water to TG Halli Reservoir. Many of us are aware of the importance of TG Halli Reservoir. It is used to supply drinking water to many parts of Bangalore. Now, there is no water at the reservoir due to urbanisation of its catchment area. Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board should not depend on rain water to fill the reservoir. I hope Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda will allot funds to divert Hemavathi river water to TG Halli reservoir. As far as the infrastructure in Bangalore is concerned, the government has to do a lot to improve it. Traffic jams are norm now. For example, many roads in Srinagar Ward are narrow. It will be difficult for motorists to use these roads. The BBMP has to do something to mitigate the traffic-related problems at Srinagar. I think the corporator has been taking up development works regularly with whatever funds allotted to the ward.
