The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry has decided to conduct DNA tests on two new born boys, delivered on the same day in a ward following confusion on their parentage, created by the negligent hospital staff.
The alleged negligence by the staff on duty in the maternity wing of the hospital in tying the tags with the correct particulars of names of the mothers around the hands of new borns led to confusion and embarrassment to the mothers in correctly identifying their respective babies. Vijayalakshmi, a resident from Mudaliarpet in Puducherry delivered a baby boy in a ward on August 22 and half an hour later Anitha, another woman from Delarshpet, also delivered a baby boy in the same ward.
The staff in the ward tied tags with the name of Anitha around the hands of the both children. As the tags carried the same name, the mothers and their relatives found it difficult to identify their respective kids. When a blood group test of the children was done, it was found that both were having the same group. Following protests, hospital authorities decided to conduct DNA tests on the babies.
The children would be taken care of by the hospital and handed over to the respective mothers after getting the results of the test, hospital sources said. They said they were also conducting an inquiry to ascertain how the mix-up has happened.
