Sepang: Formula One drivers are as divided as the sport's fans over the muted sound of the cars' new engines.

Asked on Thursday about the soft purr of the V6 turbos compared with the old roar of the V8s, world champion Sebastian Vettel gave a one-word expletive as an answer, although former champion Jenson Button had no time for complaints.

Vettel, who retired early from the first race in Australia with engine trouble, was a spectator in Melbourne along with the fans and was stunned at how much else he could hear besides the passing cars.

"I was on the pitwall during the race, and it's better than in the bar," Vettel said. "Formula One has to be spectacular and the sound is one of the most important things."

"The one thing I remember (attending a grand prix as a child) was the sound, how loud they were and how the ground was vibrating, and it's a shame we don't have that anymore."

Button disagreed with Vettel, saying the sound was unimportant.

"Go and race somewhere else if you're not happy," Button said. "When you win a grand prix, you don't care what it sounds like, or looks like, because you know you've beaten the best in the world."
