Pro-Left youth activists, including DYFI workers, allegedly manhandled Congress leader and Janasree Susthira Vikasana Mission chairman M M Hassan who was slated to deliver the keynote address at a reception meeting organised in Aluva in connection with the Kudumbasree Mission’s ‘Pusthaka Yatra’ on Sunday.
21 DYFI activists were arrested in the incident. Later, 19 of them were released on bail. Hassan, against whom allegations have surfaced regarding his shares in Janasree Micro Fin Limited, arrived at the Priyadarshini Town Hall in Thottakkatukara, Aluva, to attend the function.
As soon as he entered the dais, DYFI activists rushed to the stage and nearly pulled him down even as Congress workers rushed to his defence. The protestors shouted slogans against Hassan, referring to the Janasree allegations. Hassan was detained for more than one-and-a half-hours on the dais by the protestors. A commotion followed in which congress leaders tried to calm the scene down. In the ensuing melee, six persons, including Alangad panchayat president T U Prasad, DYFI Aluva Town committee member Faisal Ismail, Community Development Society (CDS) members Sheela Shiji and Nees Anilkumar and Alangad Panchayath member T K Shajahan suffered injuries.
The protestors including DYFI, Janatipatya Mahila Association and CDS activists outnumbered the Congress workers. They staged a sit-in till the police arrived on the scene and arrested them. Hassan told that he came to attend the function on an invitation by Minister for Panchayats and Social Welfare M K Muneer and he wanted to clear the recent allegations against him.
