What would you do if you were given an image of an extremely angry-looking Rajinikanth and were asked to draw a caricature of the Superstar looking really happy? In most cases, the answer would be nothing more than a blank stare, but a professor at NIFT—Chennai and founder of InkLink, a creative online ‘unschool’, Kaustav Sengupta seems to think it’s the easiest thing to do. “It’s very simple,” he says, providing a peek into the workshop ‘Emotions and Exxxpressions’, which will be conducted later this month.
Organised by Design and Art Clan or DA Clan, an offline offshoot of InkLink, the workshop will teach students to interpret various human emotions through art, design and music. “We’re going to be taking the participants on a visual journey to understand the role of emotions in creative fields,” says Sengupta.
Taejha Singh Susheela , a popular Mohiniyattam dancer will show participants how human emotions can be portrayed through dance. Political cartoonist Bala will teach the basics of cartooning, apart from using techniques to derive human expressions, while musician Saroop Oommen will help participants understand the theme of the workshop through music.
“I will be teaching the basics of caricatures and even if you have no idea how to draw, with the help of some basic moves, you’ll go back home with at least one work of art,” promises Sengupta. “I’ll help participants understand which of a person’s characteristics ought to be focused on, while caricaturing them.”A definite highlight of the workshop is city-based graffiti artist Joyston Christopher Vaz’s session. Explaining that graffiti is an art form where everything is spontaneous, Vaz says, “Since there is no pre-drawn sketch and it’s directly drawn on the wall, graffiti is greatly influenced by what you’re feeling at the moment. If you’re happy, your colour schemes will reflect that mood. Originality and expression is the key.” “What we are really trying to bring out is that though there are various mediums of art, the emotions and expressions that they represent can be the same,” says Sengupta”
