London: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped defender Wes Brown to make it into England's World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old centre-half has not made an international appearance since winning his ninth cap against the United States last year.

But he has hit top form after overcoming injury problems, resulting in Ferguson delaying the introduction of Pound 7-million signing Nemanja Vidic.

"Wes is an outstanding candidate to go to the World Cup," Ferguson said.

"I have always felt when Wes is fit, he is the best natural defender in the game. He is like a lot of good Italian and Argentine players who pride themselves on their defending. He knows he is a defender, he knows why he is a defender and he concentrates on it. That is why he is such a good one," he said.

"But whenever we talk about him, we always say he needs luck to stay away from another bad injury. England do have some good defenders. John Terry is a certainty to be picked and Rio Ferdinand would be the other for me. Ledley King and Sol Campbell are other options but Wes would be a good one to have," he added.

"We would be absolutely delighted for him to get picked. He would certainly deserve to go."

Brown is expected to be in the side to face Wolves in Sunday's FA Cup fourth round tie at Molineux, but Ferguson is facing huge problems in midfield.

Paul Scholes and John O'Shea were ruled out last week, while Ryan Giggs will be on the sidelines for up to 10 days with a hamstring injury.

"It is a big blow to lose Ryan and Paul in particular because they have so much experience," Ferguson admitted.

"It is very difficult," he said. "Ideally, we wanted to get someone on loan but we have exhausted that avenue and it is looking very unlikely anything will happen now."
