Sub Lieutenant Shivangi Swaroop, the first woman pilot of the Indian Navy, will join naval operations on Monday, two days ahead of Navy Day on December 4 upon completion of operational training.

Speaking to CNN-News18, Swaroop said that she feels lucky to be a part of 'history'."For me, no job can be better than this. I have dreamed of this and now I am living my dream," said the navy officer, who has been harbouring the ambition of becoming a pilot since the age of 10.

"As a kid, I saw an MLA coming in a chopper once...I saw the pilot operating the helicopter and ever since, I, too, wanted to do that."

“I have been craving for this since a very long time and finally it is here, so it's a great feeling. I am looking forward to completing my third stage of training,” she added.

Shivangi will graduate to become the first female pilot of the Indian Navy. She hails from Muzzafarpur in Bihar and completed her schooling from DAV Public school in Muzzafarpur.

She was inducted into Indian Navy as SSC (Pilot) as part of 27 NOC course in Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, and was formally commissioned by Vice Admiral AK Chawla, last June.

The Navy's aviation branch has had women officers operating as air traffic control officers and as 'observers' in aircraft who are responsible for communication and weapons.

Shivangi, who had been undergoing training at the Southern Naval Command here, will get authorisation on December 2 to fly Dornier aircraft.

Speaking about her journey, the young pilot said, "Flying is a completely different feeling, it takes a lot of hard work to get there."

"Five years ago no one thought this was possible. But now I am sure we'll see women operating fighter planes and being commissioned to submarines," she added.
