New Delhi: The verdict on quantum of punishment in the 2002 Sabarmati Express train burning case will be pronounced on March 1 by the special court in Ahmedabad. The prosecution had demand death penalty for all the 31 convicts in the case.
All 31 convicts were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder among other charges in the gruesome train burning case in which 59 karsewaks were killed.
The sentence came nine years after the tragic incident which sparked off one of India's worst communal riots.
The court also acquitted 63 people including - Maulvi Hussain Umarji - the man the Gujarat police says is the prime conspirator of that tragedy.
Judge PR Patel, who conducted the trial inside the Sabarmati Central Jail premises, will pronounce the quantum of punishment after hearing the 31 convicts.
The court accepted the prosecution's contention that there was a conspiracy behind the incident.
Apart from the charges of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy, the accused were convicted under IPC sections 147, 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 323, 324, 325, 326 (causing hurt), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds), various sections of the Indian Railways Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and Bombay Police Act.
