CHENNAI: The Green Kalam movement, a mass tree plantation drive across the state spearheaded by popular cine comedian Vivek and Exnora International, has met its target of planting 10 lakh saplings, say its organisers. The final sapling will be planted by former president APJ Abdul Kalam at a tsunami affected village in Cuddalore in January.Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Vivek said, “I was inspired by Kalam who asked me to start this campaign as a message to combat global warming. And as promised, with the help of community support, we were able to complete planting 10 lakh trees.”According to the organisers, NGOs, educational institutions and business houses including Siruthuli, Anna University, Annamalai University, Sakthi Masala and MARG Properties have donated the 10 lakh saplings. “Some timber industries have also come forward and donated saplings to compensate the lost trees which is a good sign,” added Vivek. V Ponraj, scientific advisor to Abdul Kalam, said the practice of cutting trees was rampant in our country despite technology being available to replant fully grown trees. “Many trees are being destroyed by the Golden Quadrilateral project across the country. If we practise relocation techniques followed in countries like Dubai, we can conserve the environment,” he said.
