Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais on Thursday said that had the teen accused in Pune Porsche accident been a member of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the incident would not have happened. Bais was talking about the need for NCC to be made compulsory in all schools and colleges across the country.
“Personally speaking, I would like NCC to be made compulsory in all schools and colleges across the country. In the Pune accident, had the child (minor accused) been an NCC cadet this accident would not have occurred. A sense of discipline and patriotism that gets instilled in children, the sense of dedicating oneself to the country is foremost for all of us…If the child is disciplined, he will be disciplined and follow the right path…”
The Maharashtra Governor was addressing the felicitation ceremony of the Governor’s citation to NCC Directorate Maharashtra.
On May 19, an intoxicated 17-year-old boy crushed two bike-borne IT professionals to death with his speeding Porsche car in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. The case created a huge media and public outrage after the teen, the son of a builder, was granted bail 14 hours after the accident.
However, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) later overturned the bail order and sent the teen accused to observation home till June 5.
The case has also been constantly hitting the headlines because of revelations about attempts that were made to help the 17-year-old evade the law. From bribing a doctor to swap the blood sample of the accused to pressuring the driver to take the blame, the teen’s family’s attempts to deceive the law were uncovered.
The allegations of involvement of political meddling in the Pune Porsche case were levelled up with the claims of Sassoon Hospital’s dean, who asserted that one of the doctors accused of replacing the blood samples of the teenager involved in the accident had been made the head of the forensic department at the insistence of a state minister and an MLA.
