The main accused in the violence that broke out in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani over the demolition of an “illegally” built madrasa was arrested on Sunday. So far thirty persons have been arrested in connection with the clash, police official said.
Meanwhile, schools have been allowed to reopen after the curfew, imposed in the state, was lifted.
Earlier, state government officials told CNN-News18 that the key accused — Abdul Malik — was arrested in Delhi and brought back to Haldwani for questioning.
Malik was arrested with his son and three others namely Malik, Jisan Parves, Javed Siddiqui, Mehboob Alam and Arshad Ayub. They have been accused of indulging in rioting, arson, damage to public property and obstructing public servants from doing their work.
Javed Siddique, brother of an SP leader, was arrested after CCTV footage proved his role in rioting.

- Situation in the Banbhoolpura area remained normal on Monday as extra paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain law and order.
- Nainital SSP Prahlad Meena noted that essential commodities are being supplied to the residents of the curfew-hit area. The Banbhoolpura Primary Health Centre (PHC) and medical stores in the area have been opened and gas cylinders are also being supplied to the resident.
- Schools have been reopened in Haldwani after the curfew imposed in the area, in view of the violence, was lifted on Monday. Notably, curfew was lifted in the rest of Haldwani except the Banbhoolpura area on Sunday.
- Police said that the CCTV footage and mobile videos are still being scanned to further investigate and nab the persons involved.
- A total of 30 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the rioting over the demolition of an “illegal” madrasa. The key accused in the case, Abdul Malik, was arrested from Delhi on Sunday.
- A delegation of the Uttarakhand Congress on Sunday met with chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and demanded an impartial probe into the violence. Dhami told them that the state government took immediate action in the matter.
- Dhami told the delegation that the Kumaon commissioner was conducting a magesterial probe into it and would submit his report in 15 days.
- Addressing the media on Sunday evening, Nainital’s Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena said that most of the fresh arrests were made within the limits of Nainital. She added that the seven pistols and 54 live cartridges that had allegedly been looted from the Bhanbhoolpura station were recovered from those arrested.
- A delegation of representatives from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind visited Haldwani. The Jamiat’s chief Maulana Arshad Madani condemned the police action and said that the report submitted by the delegation was extremely painful.
- Madani alleged that the police, instead of enforcing law and order, “become a party against Muslims everywhere” but act differently in cases involving others. “Discrimination on the basis of religion among (different groups of) protesters is deplorable,” he said.
