Uttar Pradesh BJP on Wednesday attacked the ruling Samajwadi Party government over the alleged rape and forcible religious conversion of a woman in Meerut and sought a probe by Special Task Force of the police.
"The horrific incident of Meerut has shocked the conscience of the nation. But the SP government is, as usual, in a state of denial. This is a regime which has in the recent past tried to brush under the carpet heinous events like those that took place in Badaun and Lucknow's Mohanlalganj," state BJP president Lakshmikant Bajpai told reporters in Allahabad.
"We doubt that Meerut police, given the amount of political interference as also its usual workload, will be able to do investigation with the focus that such a sensitive matter deserves.
"The BJP, therefore, demands that the probe be handed over to the STF of UP police," he added.
Asked whether he did not favour a CBI inquiry into the matter, he said "our demand for the STF probe would automatically lead to a CBI probe.
Replying to a query, Bajpai said "our national president Amit Shah will be in UP on a two-day visit later this month.
He is scheduled to inaugurate the public relations office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi.
However, it would not be correct to say that it is going to be a "mini PMO".
