HYDERABAD: After YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, it will now be the turn of former chief minister and Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu to face a CBI investigation into his "riches". The High Court on Monday asked the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and SEBI to conduct a preliminary investigation independently into Chandrababu Naidu's assets and submit a report to the court within three months in sealed envelopes.
The court gave the directive, acting on a 2,424page petition filed by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's mother and legislator YS Vijayamma on October 17 that Chandrababu Naidu had, when he was the chief minister of the state between 1995 and 2004, amassed huge wealth using questionable methods. The direction given by the bench comprising justices Ghulam Mohammed and Nooti Ramamohan Rao could not have come at a worse time when Naidu is in the thick of leading a movement against corruption.

The High Court followed the same practice when the TDP filed a petition seeking a CBI investigation into the wealth of Jagan Mohan Reddy. Though a petition against Jagan was filed first by minister P Shankar Rao when he was an MLA, the TDP filed a similar petition subsequently on which the High Court first ordered a preliminary investigation and, after the CBI submitted its report within the stipulated time, ordered a fullfledged investigation in August.

Vijayamma, in her petition included in the list of 20 respondents Naidu's wife N Bhuvaneswari, his son N Lokesh, chairman of Eenadu group of publications Ch Ramoji Rao and chairman of Sujana group YS Chowdary.

Vijayamma alleged that Naidu and his family members had first purchased land near Hitec City in 1989 and then announced setting up of the IT park in 1996 as chief minister, thus helping themselves to making a huge amount of money.
