Monsoon rains are continuing to wreak havoc across the country. Incessant rains have triggered deadly landslides in 25 places across Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.

At least 38 people have died in the landslides which have caused extensive damage to National Highways 10 & 55, cutting off the road link from Siliguri to Sikkim and Darjeeling. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Mirik landslide site in New Jalpaiguri late on Wednesday night to assess the situation.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju will also be visiting affected areas in Siliguri on Thursday to take stock of the situation. The Centre has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in northern Uttarakhand has triggered landslides leading to blocking of the Haldwani-Ramnagar highway. Tourism in the state has also been hit with The Jim Corbett Park remaining shut due to heavy rains in the region.

Rain fury has also led to massive crop damage in Gujarat. Downpour followed by floods in several parts of the state have washed away more than 14,600 hectares of farmland since last week. Amreli and Rajkot are the worst hit where Shetrunji and Bhadar rivers overflowed after incessant rains.

Lifestock has also been hit with 3,700 cattle dead in Amreli alone. The state government is assessing the damage and will compensate all those who suffered crop losses.
