KOCHI: As part of its effort to develop tourism in Fort Kochi, the Cochin Heritage Zone Conservation Society (CHZCS), has decided to set up a medicinal garden on the premises of the Fort Kochi jail. The garden will be funded by the Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL).The jail, part of the larger jail complex which houses a number of buildings including the current office of the Revenue Divisional Officer, was renovated in 2008.But, after that the development works at the jail has been more or less stagnated.“The locals here say that many of our freedom fighters, including EMS and A K Gopalan, had stayed here. But the jail has hardly got any historical records preserved owing to which it has not gained the significance it deserves. The garden will be a step in the right direction,” said K E Gafoor, CHZCS supervisor and jail in-charge.The project has been handed over to Nirmiti Kendra.“The project can be completed in a month.A society from Wayanad has already agreed to provide the plants.A list of plants has been sent to us.Those that can adapt to our climatic condition would be selected and planted. The area for the garden has already been identified. The land has to be raised and terraced as per the requirements of a garden,” said Nirmiti Kendra project director P J George. The proposal to set up a medicinal garden with other amenities was included under the Revitalisation of Fort Kochi Project. But, since the funds did not arrive, the project was undertaken separately with a fund of about `1 lakh.
