CHENNAI: An engineer with the Highways Department was held allegedly for cheating and raping a 23-year-old woman at JJ Nagar here on Friday.Police said the woman, a resident of Anna Nagar West, had met one Sridhar (44) through a friend Shantha. She attended Shantha’s birthday party where Sridhar was also present and felt giddy after consuming a cool drink that she doubted was mixed with sedatives, police said. Shantha had then allegedly asked Sridhar to drop the woman home. But when she regained consciousness, she found herself lying in Sridhar’s house.The woman cried and fought, when Sridhar allegedly promised to marry her. She became pregnant in August last year after which the man rented a house in Adambakkam and lived with her. The woman gave birth to a baby girl.Later, she found that he was already married. The woman then lodged a complaint against Sridhar and a case was registered under IPC sections 376 (punishment for rape), 417 (punishment for cheating) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation).
