GULBARGA: The history of the liberation of the districts of Karnataka from the erstwhile Hyderabad state which was merged with the Union of India on September 17, 1948, - an interesting saga no doubt - is not considered worthwhile to be included in textbooks by the state government.There is not even a single lesson about the Hyderabad State liberation movement in any of the textbooks of any class, except for a mere 39 lines in a lesson titled ‘Bhasha Vaividhyate’ in the seventh standard Kannada textbook in the form of dialogues between students of Kinnal village and authorities over the atrocities committed by the Razakars of Hyderabad Nizam.The lesson aims at highlighting diversity in the same language.Headmistress of Chetana School Vanamala Mathapati says, “We are unable to teach the history of our liberation due to lack of lessons,” a view echoed by school teachers Bharati Awate and Basamma Shastri.When Express contacted director of textbooks Deviprasad, he said, “Though the syllabi of first, second, fith and eighth standards are being changed for the next academic year, lessons on the H-K liberation and its merger with independent India are absent.”He added that the government has not issued any orders to include lessons on the movement.“It will be impossible to include the lessons now as the textbooks are being printed. We will consider inclusion of the lessons for the next year if they arrive.”It may be recalled that former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, in his speech on September 17, 2009, had assured to include the history of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, comprising Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur and Koppal districts, in textbooks from the next academic year itself.Gulbarga University has awarded doctorates to six candidates for their thesis on erstwhile Hyderabad State Liberation Movement, particularly on Hyderabad-Karnataka region, according to university librarian Gaddugemath.
