Sao Paulo (Brazil) International rights organisations have for long pointed fingers at Brazil as a destination for flesh trade. But the commercial sex workers of the Bahia state of Brazil have decided to stand up for their rights.
What better way to make your voice heard than through the radio? The Association of Prostitutes in Sao Paulo, Brazil, are starting up their own radio station, Radio Zona.
The aim of the initiative is not to apologise for the prostitution or attract women to the business, but to struggle for the dignity of the profession.
The FM station, which is to start broadcasting in the second half of the year, will feature programmes about prostitution.
It will also address issues such as sexual abuse, racism, AIDS prevention and human rights.
The station is to be staffed by working women and media professionals. And the funds for running Radio Zona will come from advertising and sponsorships.
