Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday reviewed the power situation in Tamil Nadu and expedited the works on three projects which would augment the generation capacity by 3,300 MW, in order to end the power shortage in the State.
The Chief Minister chaired a meeting of senior Ministers and top officials at the Secretariat to review the progress in the works on the three units of Vallur Thermal Power Project, a joint venture of the NTPC and the TNEB (3 x 500 MW), Mettur Thermal Power Project (600 MW) and the two units of the North Chennai Thermal Power Extension Project (2 x 600 MW). After taking stock of the situation, the CM directed the authorities to speed up the ongoing works regarding the above projects so that power generation could be started in these plants at the earliest.
An official release here said that because of the expeditious steps taken by the government, the power shortage in Tamil Nadu is expected to end very soon.
The Chief Minister is frequently reviewing the power position in the State and advising the authorities about the steps to be taken to put an end to the shortage and make Tamil Nadu a power surplus State.
In the meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Finance Minister O Panneerselvam, Electricity Minister R Viswanathan, Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi, Energy Secretary Ramesh Kumar Khanna, TNEB Chairman Rajeev Ranjan, and other senior officials took part.
