BANGALORE: The Department of Food and Civil Supplies, which is in the process of eliminating ineligible ration cards in the state, has decided to accept fresh applications seeking ration cards only through an online process from Saturday.Applications for cards had been suspended for a year.Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shobha Karandlaje told reporters on Friday that the ministry has sought technical support from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to set up a comprehensive database on the public distribution system (PDS) for facilitating online applications for fresh ration cards in the state.Informing that the department officials with the assistance of NIC have so far identified over 30 lakh ration cards across the state which did not match the address or the other documents provided to the department, the Minister said that all such cards would be removed from the PDS system. She said that according to information available, the department has so far issued ration cards in rural areas to over 1.13 crore families and 52 lakh families in urban areas. Presenting a case in Bellary, the Minister said that for one address, about 78 ration cards were issued bearing different names and upon inspection, all were found bogus.“There are several such cases across the state and with the database created with the help of NIC, it has now become easy to detect ineligible cards,” Shobha Karandlaje added.
