Kerala HC issues directive for vessel to set sail

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the Ernakulam District Collector and the City Police Commissioner to take immediate measures for the removal of the obstruction caused by some persons and also ensure that the vessel M V Kavarathi, with 650 passengers bound for Lakshadweep, sets sail from here by Tuesday midnight.

A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A M Shaffique passed the order while considering a petition filed by A P Bahadur Koya of Kavarathi seeking a directive to resolve the issue.

He submitted that the voyage of the vessel was disrupted owing to the obstinate attitude of the manning contractor and two other officers who had conducted a strike seeking a salary hike.

The court pointed out that the ship ought to have left the shores on Monday but was stranded at the port on account of the strike launched by the manning contractor, the chief engineer and radio officers of the vessel crew.

The vessel has 200 women passengers and many infants, as well as patients like the petitioner who intend to reach home after getting treatment for his orthopaedic surgery.
