Jammu: Curfew on Saturday continued for fifth consecutive day in Kishtwar town that was rocked by communal clashes, while authorities relaxed the restrictions for varying periods in Udhampur, Jammu and Samba areas.
No relaxation was given in the tense Kishtwar town official sources said. Tension flared up on Friday with members of both communities almost coming to blows at a meeting convened by Advisor to the Governor S S Bloeria, who came here along with Divisional Commissioner Sudhanshu Pandey and Inspector General of Police K Rajindra.Bloeria.
They visited the area to assess the situation and facilitated a meeting between representatives of the two communities to defuse the tension. In the meeting, members of the minority community alleged that police inaction resulted in vandalising of property by the mobs, which also tried to lob a grenade.
They also wanted investigation into the episode and action against the culprits. However, Bloeria asked residents to cooperate and help District administration in Kishtwar in restoring law and order.
People in some localities defied curfew on Friday and hoisted the tricolour to celebrate Independence Day. Police, paramilitary troops and army continued to remain deployed in the town. Meanwhile, authorities relaxed curfew at 5 a.m. for 15 hours in Jammu city and Udhampur town.
In Samba, the restrictions were lifted for nine hours from 5 a.m. The relaxation period was increased in view of Raksha Bandhan festival. Curfew has already been lifted in Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch
