BHUBANESWAR: The centenary edition of Indian Science Congress will be held at Kolkata. With the official handing over of Vigyan Jyot to B Harigopal, the 99th ISC concluded here on Saturday and will now move over to West Bengal.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be the General President of the 100th edition of the Indian Science Congress to be hosted by University of Calcutta from January 3 to 7 next year. The 99th ISC was inaugurated by the Prime Minister with former Indian president Abdul Kalam, Ambassador of India to the USA Nirupama Rao, Nobel laureates and renowned scientists participating in it. Over 15,000 delegates - more than 250 from abroad - and around 1,50,000 schoolchildren had participated. ‘It was a great learning experience,” said Geetha Bali, general president, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). The ISC ended with Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare delivering the valedictory address. Bhandare spoke on how science should be used to bring about development. He said women are treated as equals because of science. With the increasing use of science, the brain power is more respected than the physical power, he said. KIIT founder Achyut Samanta thanked everyone involved in organising the programme. Claiming that the event was actually a brainchild of Bali, he said, they were just helping her conduct it. The support of the National Institute of Science Education and Research Director TK Chandrashekar and ISCA were also acknowledged. Vijaylaxmi Saxena, general secretary of ISCA, and KIIT University Vice-Chancellor AS Kolaskar spoke.
