'Water shortage’ has become a buzz word in Kerala. Yet in Aluva, leaking potable water pipes are very common. The Kerala Water Authority seems to be going cool on the situation.
“The authorities keep saying they will fix the problem immediately but invariably, they never take action,” lament the locals.
The main reason for the continued leakage is the obsolete technologies adopted by the contractors. Instead of continuing with the age-old repairing methods, the authorities should use new technologies for lasting results, people say.
The pipe which supplies water to the Kerala Water Authority’s tanker lorry is itself leaking. Pipes near the drainage canal beside the Aluva Town Hall and the one lying close to the municipal library are leaking.
However, what worries the public is that there is no toll-free number to inform the authorities about the leaks.
People have been asking to set up a water surveillance monitory team to deal with water safety and security. But the authorities are keeping mum. The other aspect is that many pipes are set up near drainage canals. There are chances for bacterial and biological growth in the pipe water due to back suction by the pipe system. There were reports of a zoological specimen like earthworm in drinking water taken from a public tap.
The authorities have to immediately swing into action as the survey reports prove that 70 percentage of contagious diseases are water-borne.
