New Delhi: Suspected Maoists struck in West Bengal and Jharkhand late on Friday night blowing up railway tracks in the two states affecting train services.
One railway track was blown up between Urma and Kantadih stations in Purulia district of West Bengal affecting train services on Purulia-Chandil section of South Eastern Railway's Adra division.
According to police officials the Maoists planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the tracks on Friday night. There have been no reports of any injury.
"Maoists have called for a bandh from 12 pm (00:00 hrs IST) onwards. I believe they've done this to make their call for bandh a success," said Urma Railway Station Master Rattan Karkara.
Communist Party of India (Maoist) has called for a 24-hour countrywide bandh on Saturday to protest against the arrest of tribal leader Chhatradhar Mahato on September 26, who was spearheading agitations in Lalgarh area of West Bengal.
There has been a total shut down in the area due to the bandh call and life came to a standstill in the Maoist-dominated areas of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore districts of the state.
In the second attack, a railway track on Mumbai-Howrah route in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand was blown up. The blast took place at Poisaipa in Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway.
Railway Police Superintendent Richard Lakra said that the explosion affected train services on the Puri-New Delhi route.
