CHENNAI: A man was arrested by officials of the Mylapore All Women Police Station on Thursday on charges of cheating four women whom he tied the knot with. According to police, Gandhi alias Christopher Gandhi (40), a B Sc graduate from Pichipalayam in Salem, met Arockiamary Rosy through a matrimony portal.Although Rosy’s parents opposed their relationship, they eloped and got married in 2007. The couple were living in Loop street, Mandaivelipakkam, and Gandhi was engaged in water can business. After Rosy filed a police complaint alleging that Gandhi had threatened her when she came to know about his marriage with another woman, Rathi Devi of Anna Nagar, Gandhi was arrested.Gandhi then narrated his marital escapades to the cops. He told them that he first got married to one Vijayalakshmi of Andhra Pradesh, then to Meena, a former college lecturer from Chennai in 2005, to Rosy in 2007 and  finally, Rathi Devi, a week ago.Police said that Rosy found some documents in their house, which revealed that his second wife Meena had filed a complaint with the Triplicane All Women Police Station in 2005, alleging that Gandhi had cheated her by not revealing that he was already hitched. When Rosy questioned Gandhi about this, he told her that he had divorced Meena before marrying her. Rosy, who bought his claims initially, later lodged a police complaint when she began to suspect his activities and found that he tied the knot again, this time to Rathi Devi, a week ago. When she questioned him, he threatened her. “It was Rathi Devi who first found out that her husband was already married to another woman. Her brother informed Rosy,” said the police official. “Vijayalakshmi was a witness in the case that Meena lodged in 2005. We are yet to ask to him about his first wife. We will see all the documents in that case and proceed further,” he added. Interestingly, this was not Gandhi’s first tryst with the law. “He was also arrested by the Namakkal police for impersonating a vigilance officer and taking money from a village administrative officer. Arockiamary was the one who got him released on bail,” he said.
