Wearing black badges, over 50,000 Christians who participated in the Sunday mass in Palayamkottai RC Diocese, expressed solidarity with anti-KKNPP protestors in Idinthakarai.
As decided at the monthly meeting of the Palayamkottai RC Diocese last Thursday, a hunger protest was staged on Saturday to condemn the police action against the anti-Koodankulam protesters and the alleged desecration of the St Lourde Madha Church at Idinthakarai.
The protest was held at St Antony’s Shrine in the Palayamkottai Market area. Devotees also mourned the death of fishermen Antony John and Sahayam. Diocese vicar Forane and parish priest of Tirunelveli Town, Father A Antony Curze told Express that after distributing black badges to devotes, mourning ceremonies were conducted in around 350 churches in the 40 parishes falling under the Palayamkottai RC Diocese.
He said devotees attending two or three services held at every church expressed solidarity with the protesters in Idinthakarai. Over 50,000 devotees participated in the services across the diocese. “My personal prayer to god is that a clear understanding is reached between the government and anti-Koodankulam protestors, and an amicable settlement is reached,” he said. A devotee who attended the mass at Sacred Heart Church in Udayarpatti, said, the Sunday mass was dedicated to Koodankulam issue, and for the protestors in Idinthakarai to get an amicable solution.
