Shillong: Admitting that Meghalaya faces a growing unemployment problem, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said the jobless youths in the state were many more than those recorded in the employment exchange register.
"There is a growing unemployment in the state and this is reflected in the register of the employment exchange," he said in his reply to the motion on the policy of the government to tackle unemployment in the state. He asserted his government has taken steps to curb the burgeoning joblessness.
Moving the motion, the opposition United Democratic Party's legislator Titosstarwell Chyne urged the government to solve the unemployment issue.
The chief minister said the government was forced to print one lakh police recruitment forms following the rush of unemployed youths to police stations across the state to avail the forms and apply for jobs.
"Initially, we printed 25,000 recruitment forms but we were forced to print another 75,000 after seeing young boys and girls queuing up at police stations," Sangma said.
One of the smallest states in India, Meghalaya has a population of around 30 lakh with a literacy rate of over 75 per cent, one of the highest in the country.
