LDC general manager Cdr Alex Thomas pointed out that the corporation operates vessels as per the norms of the Director General of Shipping. The vessels are being operated by the contractors, who provide officers on contract basis and are paid as per the wages approved between the Maritime Union of India (MUI) and Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA).“The contractors are bound by the contract instruments that cover the operational aspects as well as the maintenance of on-board equipment through liaison with the LDC. The contract employees are now seeking pay parity with the officers of foreign-bound vessels. “No maritime operators can afford can afford this, unless the operating vessels undertake international voyage. “The demand has been put forward by the officers with the aim to become permanent government employees, resorting to coercive means.
