New Delhi: In a major setback for Nestle India, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has ordered all states and Union Territories to test all variants of Maggi noodles. FSSAI has claimed that celebrities endorsing the brand can be held accountable and face upto Rs 10 lakh as fine. Reports of the tests have to be submitted by June 5.
This order comes even as Maggi failed food safety tests in Delhi. Out of the thirteen samples tested, the Delhi government found 10 samples to have unsafe levels of lead. Five samples contained MSG which is not mentioned in the packaging.
The government has said that once the report is final, it will take action against Maggi manufacturer, Nestle, for misbranding and selling an unsafe product. Delhi Government officials will meet Nestle representatives today to discuss the issue.
There is trouble for Maggi in other states too. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, Odisha, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Assam have sent Maggi samples for testing. While the results of the tests conducted by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will come out on Friday, the noodles have been pulled off the shelves from government-run stores in Kerala.
