KOCHI: As we ushered into another new year, this is the apt moment to remind us of the great declaration, our first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had made on August 15, 1947. It was the speech ‘Tryst with destiny’. “Everyone has a tryst with destiny. Let your passion and patriotism gush with intensity,” said Justice V R Krishna Iyer. He was delivering a lecture on ‘Vision 2012’. Iyer said that the nation is undergoing a severe cultural degradation. “United we stand and divided we fall - this was the adage which had been upheld by our nation for quite a long time. But this principle was ruthlessly quelled. Brethren are seen fighting over Mullaperiyar. If you lose the sense of unity, you are nowhere. He also pointed out that most of the Indians are living in abject penury. “There are many stark realities which have to be taken into account. We are far behind many underdeveloped African countries. We cannot be blind to this precarious situation. This is the reason why I have suggested two-child norm,” he said. He lamented that without realising this grave situation, he was called a murderer of the third child. Writer K L Mohanavarma presided over the function. Former MP Panniyan Raveendran, P C Cyriac, Chairman, Federal Bank, N Balagopal of P N Panicker Foundation and G P C Nair, chairman, SCMS group were also present.
