Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan has said that a new agriculture policy will be formulated in the state.
Chairing a district-level meeting to review the functioning of agriculture and animal husbandry departments at the collectorate conference hall here on Friday, the Agriculture Minister said that as part of the formulation of the new agricultural policy, the committee headed by K Krishnankutty would visit all the districts and hold discussions with the elected representatives and the officials concerned.
K P Mohanan said that the committee would convene a meeting here on October 30. For assisting the farmers, the government is planning to set up a welfare board for farmers and a tribunal, the Minister said.
The Minister asked the local self-government institutions to earmark maximum fund allocation for agriculture sector in their annual budget.
The Ernakulam district panchayat allocated 50 per cent of its annual budget funds for the agriculture sector, he said. Of the total budgetary funds, 40 per cent of allocation of the local bodies is made for the infrastructure sector, which is mandatory, he said.
The government will initiate measures to improve the district farms and steps will be taken to provide maximum assistance for the farmers from the farms.
The government has already taken measures to set up high-tech farms, he said. The government will give 75 per cent subsidy of the total cost of Rs 4 lakh, he said.
MLAs can suggest a location to set up a high-tech farm in their constituency. The government will invest the total cost of the farm suggested by the MLA, the Minister said.
ADM H Salimraj, agriculture director R Ajith Kumar, animal husbandry director Suma, deputy director K Anilkumar and principal agriculture officer K Chandran were present.
