No alliance with Karunakaran: CPI-M
Karat says that CPI(M) did not propose any alliance with any party other than those in the LDF for the Kerala assembly polls.

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The CPI(M)-led LDF Front in Kerala says there will not be any alliance with Karunakaran's party for the upcoming assembly polls in Kerala.

The decision of the party state committee was announced by CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat at a press meet in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

Karat said his party did not propose to have any alliance with any party other than those in the LDF.

The CPI-M Politburo's meeting in Kolkata last week referred the matter to the state committee for settling the issue.

A consensus could not be reached on the issue in the state committee with the supporters of V S Achuthanandan strongly opposing any deal with Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) after breaking away from the Congress last year.

Prakash Karat had attended the state committee meet to report the Politburo's views on the question of an alliance with Karunakaran, since the majority of LDF members are opposed to the same.

They feel that the LDF is at this time strong enough to face the ruling Congress-led UDF in the assembly polls.

The move to strike a deal with Karunakaran, favoured by the faction loyal to the CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, had sparked protests from the LDF partners CPI(M).
