No need to call on 100, Chennai cops just a SMS away
The Chennai Police have introduced a toll free messaging number.

Chennai: Women in Chennai are no more worried about standing at the bus stops alone because now they know that even if they are caught in any tough situation the police are just a SMS away.

The Chennai Police have introduced a toll free messaging number. All that has to be done now is to type the problem and location and send the message to 9500099100 and the police will reach at the location.

“I feel a little safer because I know people are going to be here in 10 minutes. Earlier we didn't know what we should do. Should we pick up the phone and wait. I'd probably not call at all but now I know I can message and they'll be here in 10 minutes,” says K N Shruthi from Chennai.

And the new service has been an instant hit. On an average everyday there are 70-80 complaint messages have been coming in everyday for the past week.

Unlike 100, where one has to call and explain the problem and then the police call and inform the respective police stations, here the messages are received on a system which automatically forwards the message to the respective Sub-inspectors of the areas mentioned in the message.

“We wanted to build contact with the common people. They may not their area sub-inspectors or inspectors. So now all they have to do is message to this number and the system will automatically forward the message to the respective Sis,” says Commission city police, T Rajendran.

And as soon as the case is attended to the Chennai Police sends a message back to the sender informing them about the status of the complaint.
