NUAPADA: A farmer, Shambu Jani (60) of Pandelbahali village in Konabeda gram panchayat of Komna block, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree near his farm late on Wednesday night. He is survived by his only son Dhabaleswar Jani (35).Jani owned 12 acres of which six acres were submerged for the Tikhali dam project and he cultivated paddy on the rest. But with monsoon playing truant, he suffered crop loss and was worried over repaying the debts he had availed.It is learnt that he had taken ` 55,000 on loan to develop six acres of land but the crops failed. Meanwhile giving a political twist to the incident, activists of the BJP and the Congress blocked National Highway-353 at Bilenjare for two hours demanding a compensation of ` 5 lakh and a government job to the bereaved family. The impasse was broken after Komna BDO Biswa Ranjan Naik paid ` 10,000 and promised to take up the case with the State Government.
