DHARMAPURI: As many as 35 people, including seven children from six families in Narthampatti village near Dharmapuri, have sought police intervention after they were ostracised by the village committee.
In a memorandum to Superintendent of Police (SP) N T Ganeshamoorthy, M Ellappan (48), P Madhu (52),M Murugan (38), M Rajan (39), M Krishnan (42) and K Peraman (58) said there were more than 40 families residing in Narthampatti village. The village head, P Raju, was responsible for conducting all temple functions.

Three years ago, a threesovereign gold chain adorning the Mariyamman deity at the village temple, had gone missing. When the six families frequently asked Raju about the missing chain, an irked village head and committee members S Adhimoolam, M Palani, C Madhu, O K Sankar, K Mani and K Sankar declared that all of them were being ostracised and ordered other villagers against talking or providing any support to them.

Since the temple festival this year falls on June 28 and 29, these six families said they were even prepared to pay the money for conducting the festival in order to be allowed to participate. However, the village head refused. When all efforts on their part failed, the families finally approached the police seeking help.

SP Ganeshamoorthy has formed a team to investigate the case. The team has been told to submit its report in two days.
