Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday ruled out deployment of the army in Pakistan's business hub Karachi to tackle spiralling violence in the city. But Sharif said paramilitary force should be given the responsibility to carry out systematic operation in the city as police is not capable to deal with the criminal elements.
Sharif said this while chairing the special cabinet meeting at the Governor House in Karachi. Calling the violence in Karachi a national issue, Sharif said that the government is considering Rangers in its bid to cleanse the city of criminal elements.
Criticising the police structure of Karachi in particular and of Pakistan in general, the Prime Minister said appointments at the senior level are usually done without merit.
"I have been told that certain DSPs, SPs and SSPs were transferred to the police department from other irrelevant departments such as Karachi water board through political influence," he said. He added that expecting such officers to do their job and protect the common man is "senseless".
Sharif underlined that the demand for Army operation in the city is too early. The Prime Minister said that the government is devising short and long term policies to improve law and order and a team of legal experts is reviewing the situation in this regard.
He said that neutral people will monitor the action to be taken for restoration of peace in Karachi. Talking to reporters, the Prime Minister vowed to initiate an indiscriminate action for restoration of law and order in Karachi. Those responsible for disturbing peace will be dealt with an iron hand.
Sharif said talks have been held with all the stakeholders to reach the right decision for bringing peace in Karachi. All no go areas will be eliminated in the city. The Prime Minister said anti-terrorism laws will be amended to effectively deal with the scourage of terrorism. He said operation against criminals will be ensured and directions of the Supreme Court regarding Karachi will be implemented in letter and in spirit.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Chaudhy Nisar Khan said a decision has been taken to immediately launch targeted action in Karachi against terrorists target killers, kidnappers for ransom and extortionists.
He said this while briefing newsmen after special cabinet meeting in Karachi and two days of consultation there on how to address the deteriorating law and situation in the city.
