New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke on the telephone with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday, during which they reaffirmed the need to accelerate implementation of ongoing projects in various sectors.
Manmohan Singh initiated the call, which lasted about 15 minutes.
"Both leaders agreed that a strong and vibrant India-Iran relationship is of strategic importance for both countries, and would be beneficial for peace and prosperity of the entire region," an official statement in New Delhi said.
The two leaders also "reaffirmed the need to accelerate the implementation of all ongoing cooperation projects including those in the energy and transport infrastructure sectors", it added.
Manmohan Singh and Ahmadinejad "expressed satisfaction at the current state of bilateral relations, which both leaders affirmed, are deeply rooted in centuries of shared history and culture", the statement said.
The conversation assumes significance in the light of the upcoming Indo-US civilian nuclear deal and Washington's opposition to Iran's nuclear enrichment programme.
India has voted against the Iranian programme at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
