THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Quick Response Team of the state police has been given the onus of the security of Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple here where a treasure trove had been discovered. A 15member team would stand guard at the temple until the high level committee appointed by the DGP chalks out future plans.
The commando team, which had received training from the NSG (National Security Guard) and armed with Light Machine Guns, took over the security charge of the temple on Tuesday evening. It was after a series of review meetings held in and around the temple by a team comprising ADGP Venugopal K Nair, IG Padmakumar and City Commissioner Manoj Abraham that the commando team was deployed. Earlier in the day, Devaswom Minister V S Sivakumar, who visited the temple, said that the State Government would take all steps to ensure that the security put in place at the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple was foolproof. He said that an officer in the rank of SP would be entrusted with the responsibility of the security of the temple.
Already, two platoons of armed police had been deployed and at each entrance 50 armed police personnel are manning the security.Meanwhile, resentment against one of the members of the seven member committee for making open comments regarding the unearthed treasure at the temple, is growing strong from many quarters. The petitioner, T P Sundararajan, whose complaint had led to the Supreme Court directive to prepare an inventory of the items inside the closed vaults of the temple, said that the open comments could have been avoided. "Nobody should rush to conclusions as to whether the assets have been looted by anyone or not. One should have waited before making open comments,'' he said. However, Sundararajan said that only after further communication with his advocate would he decide on moving the Supreme Court against the committee member. A member of the Travancore royal family, Aditya Varma, said that the Supreme Court had only asked to prepare the inventory and giving out information was not allowed. However, he did not confirm reports that the royal family was planning to move the court against the open comments of Justice C S Rajan, one of the members of the seven member committee.
