New Delhi: Suspended IPS officer R K Sharma, who is the prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case, on Friday denied that he, during his tenure as IG Prisons, Haryana, was in touch of one of co-accused, who was then lodged in Gurgaon jail in connection with another case.
In his testimony before Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Rajender Kumar, Sharma denied the prosecution claim that he, with an aim of helping co-accused Ved Prakash Sharma, who was brought to the jail for serving a 10-year prison term in a rape case, had talked to him on telephone.
"As IG Prisons, Haryana, I used to receive phone calls from 19 jail and sub-jail superintendents and other officers. I do not recall the specific dates of the phone calls," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
The prosecution had alleged that Sharma was in touch with his co-accused Ved Prakash Sharma and had not only made several calls to the Gurgaon jail but had also gone there on July 18, 2002 in his official capacity.
The charge was denied by Sharma during recording of his statement under section 313 of the CrPC which entered the fifth day.
Sharma, by far, has answered 280 questions posed by the ASJ and the recording of his testimony would continue on March 19, the next date of hearing.
The prosecution had alleged that Sharma, along with five accused -- Pradeep Sharma, Satya Prakash, Ved Prakash Sharma, Ved alias Kalu and Sri Bhagwan -- had conspired to eliminate Shivani as he wanted to get rid of the relationship
with her.
