New Delhi: Congress' Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi stormed the stronghold of RLD leader Ajit Singh on Sunday as he resumed his UP roadshow and embarked on a three-day tour of western UP to campaign for the second phase of elections scheduled for April 13.
There were some tense moments in Baghra when Rahul Gandhi's entourage came face to face with supporters of Ajit Singh's RLD.
According to reports reaching here, Rahul landed in Baghra in the afternoon and his helicopter landed at a pad built just about 100 metres away from the venue of a rally addressed by RLD chief Ajit Singh.
The Congress leader immediately headed for the Aaliya Babul Havaiz dargah right next to the venue of the rally and spent some time there.
As he was coming out of the dargah, some RLD workers at the rally went up to him and chatted with him. Standing atop a jeep, Rahul then started waving at the people and gestured to them to join him.
Rahul also freely mingled with people, shook their hands and chatted with them in his characteristic style, giving his Special Protection Group (SPG) bodyguards a tough time. While some people responded to Rahul's call by coming near him, others at the rally gestured at him to go away.
Some awkward moments were witnessed as some Congress supporters took objection to the RLD workers gesturing at Rahul. Singh and Rahul did not come face to face as the former had left the rally.
The Gandhi scion is scheduled to address a number of election meetings in western Uttar Pradesh during his three-day tour, during which he will cover Meerapur, Jansath, Muzaffarnagar, Baghra and Sisauli.
He will also address a rally with Mahendra Singh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait, whose Bahujan Kisan Dal has a pre-poll tie up with the Congress.
The junior Gandhi is also scheduled to address public meetings at Jhinjana, Thana Bhawan, Saharanpur, Hapur, Dadri, Khurja, Aligarh, Barauli, Iglas, Sasni and Sadabad.
