THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The self-financing engineering colleges will earmark five percent seats in each branch for educating meritorious students free of cost.
This was one of the major provisions in the agreement signed by Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements Association secretary T A Vijayan and Higher Education Principal Secretary Tom Jose here on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The free seats are being provided under the fee waiver scheme of the AICTE. The total number of free seats per branch would be three. Of the three seats, one will be for a meritorious girl student, one for a student from economically backward family and one for physically challenged student.

In the absence of physically challenged student, this seat will also go to meritorious girl student and in the absence of meritorious girl student it will go to student from economically backward family. The managements will be given five percent extra seats in place of the seats earmarked in the fee waiver category.

As per the agreement 50 percent seats under the government quota will be divided of which half will have last year's fees of Rs 35,000. The other half will have Rs 60,000 as fees. The management seat fees will be same as last year, up to an upper limit of Rs 99,000 and a workshop fees of Rs 25,000 and a refundable deposit of Rs 1.50 lakh.
