New Delhi: Russia's Maria Sharapova defeated France's Emilie Loit in a first round match of the French Open at the Roland Garros in Paris on Wednesday to enter the second round.
The Russian won in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.
However, the day was not so lucky for another Russian ,Anastasia Myskina who had won the women's title in 2004.
Myskina had nothing going her way as she lost 6-1, 6-0 to American Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round.
Shaughnessy had in fact not won a match at the French Open since 2004.
