However, this will be a boon for the farmer of the district and it will be multipurpose storage unit which will provide space for storage, packing and grading of fruits,” Dr M Vishwanath, deputy director of Department of Horticulture, Shimoga said.It is estimated that around 800 tonnes of ripe fruit and flower rot due to lack of storage facility. With the aim of promoting floriculture in the district this facility is being setup, Viswanath added.The grading system in the proposed unit would also help growers to separate high quality products for export purposes and it would help in promoting export of flowers and fruits, including banana, sapota, mango and pineapple in huge quantities in the district.“As I incurred losses due to lack of cold storage facility, I have stopped cultivating vegetables and started growing coconut, areca nut and cinnamon which are less dependent on cold storage.
