The Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday told a Kolkata court that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, spoke with Tala Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, shortly after a 31-year-old doctor was found dead on the hospital premises.
“He is not an accused in rape and murder but he might have role in larger conspiracy,” the CBI told the court, News18 has learned.
The central agency arrested Mondal last night on charges of tampering with evidence in the rape-murder case. Ghosh, previously arrested for financial irregularities, now also faces charges of tampering with evidence.
“We want to confront both of them,” the CBI’s counsel told the court, highlighting that they have evidence that shows that the now-arrested police officer had communicated with the former principal.
“He came to the spot at 11am and an FIR was registered after 11pm,” the CBI counsel further added.
The two were presented in court today and remanded in CBI custody for two days. The case is scheduled for the next hearing on September 17.
The Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court have questioned the delay in the registration of the FIR. The FIR in the trainee doctor’s alleged rape-and-murder case was filed 14 hours after the doctor’s body was found.
Both questioned the RG Kar administration, which was headed by Ghosh at the time, regarding the delay and their failure to register a police complaint which would have led to the filing of the FIR.
These are the CBI’s first arrests in the rape-and murder-case following their month-long investigation. The Kolkata Police had arrested civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy earlier, who was later transferred to CBI custody after the high court moved the investigation to the central agency.
