Sreedharan, the man behind India's many firsts
Sreedharan has been at the helm of many prestigious projects.

Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, its builder and executor, 77-year-old Railway Engineer Sreedharan has been at the helm of many prestigious projects.

A look at his accomplishments:

Sreedharan has been responsible for the construction of the Metro rail project in Delhi, which uses some of the most advanced technology in the field of civil, electrical, signalling and telecommunication engineering worldwide.

Sreedharan was earlier responsible for building the largest rail project in India after Independence by linking the west coast of India through the 760 km-long Konkan Railway line.

He has been conferred several honours, including the country's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 2001 and he was named the Asian Hero by the Time magazine in 2003.

He was the CNN IBN Indian of the Year for public service in 2007.

Sreedharan was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French government in 2005.

Was to retire by the end of 2005, but his tenure was extended by three years to oversee completion of phase two of Delhi Metro.

The Pakistan and UAE governments have approached him in the past to develop their metro projects.
