Forest Department officials had a tough time evacuating a tusker stranded in an islet of the Brahmani river near Landijhari village under Barkote forest range on Friday.
The effort paid off after 12 hours as the elephant walked out of the area on its own just before the sunset.
Reports said the villagers spotted the elephant on Friday morning standing tall among grasses in an islet. It is believed that the elephant could have walked into the islet when the water-level was low but stayed stuck following a surge in the river.
On being informed, personnel of Barkote forest range rushed to the spot and tried to chase away the elephant with the help of local fishermen.
Finally, just before sunset when water receded, the elephant walked out of the islet and rushed towards Barposi forest.
Barkote Forest Ranger Bijay Kumar Mohanty said the tusker could have strayed from Paudi Bhuiyan Reserve Forest. The forest official would follow the tusker keeping a close watch till it feels comfortable there, he added.
